The Murray kitchen: a full gut remodel in Cedar Mills, NW Portland. We leveled the floor, closed a doorway for more wall, added new windows, and opened a dated galley into a sage-green kitchen with a proper island.
The Murray home is a 1961 house in Cedar Mills, NW Portland. The kitchen was the whole project: a dated, closed-off galley taken down to the studs and rebuilt.
We reframed and leveled the floor over a new subfloor, closed a doorway to win back a full wall of cabinets, and added new windows for light. A custom island with a speed oven and pendant lighting anchors the new open plan.
The finish is a warm, sage-green kitchen: white uppers, quartz counters, a pro gas range with a custom hood, a glass display cabinet, and white-oak floors run throughout. We are booking 2026 kitchen remodels now for homeowners who want the same.
A 1961 galley kitchen was built to be closed off. The move that changes everything is not a new appliance, it is reworking the walls and floor so the room finally opens up, levels out, and holds real light.
Tyrell has run WCG kitchen builds across the Portland metro, Murray among them. With interior director Anna Woodland on design, he owned the schedule, the trades, and the final walk-through, so one person answered for the result.
A gut kitchen remodel is the highest-return room in most older Portland homes. It is where the household actually lives. The job is to fix the bones, then make it beautiful, so it works for the next twenty years.
The whole room changed. A closed layout with white-laminate cabinets, tile counters, and a walling peninsula became an open kitchen with a custom island, quartz counters, white-oak floors, and a pro gas range on a subway-tile wall.

Closing a doorway won back a full wall for a glass display cabinet and a run of cabinetry, and new windows brought in light. The island now opens straight into the dining area, so the kitchen finally works as one room.

A kitchen is only as good as the framing, the floor, and the systems behind the cabinets. Here is what went into the Murray kitchen.
The dated kitchen was fully gutted so the layout, floor, and finishes could be rebuilt from scratch.
A sloped floor was reframed over a new subfloor, then finished in continuous white-oak hardwood.
Closing an existing doorway won back a full wall for cabinetry and a glass display cabinet.
New windows were added to brighten the room and open the kitchen to the yard.
A custom island with pendant lighting and a speed oven built into the cabinetry anchors the plan.
A professional gas range and custom hood, white uppers, sage-green lowers, quartz, and a touch faucet.
