The Berkshire Project

A west-side split-level, reimagined for how families live now.

This whole-home restoration reworked a 1962 split-level ranch on Portland's west side from the studs out. The brief was simple: keep the era-appropriate charm, add the amenities a modern family actually uses.

We enlarged the kitchen with custom cabinetry and Cortez quartz counters, then added a wine bar and a dedicated coffee station. Black Marvin 12-foot sliding glass doors pull daylight deep into the living spaces. Every bathroom was rebuilt with white subway tile, brushed-brass fittings, and marble floors.

The result balances warmth and function: white-oak floors throughout, a professional gas range, and quiet, well-made details in every room. We are booking 2026 whole-home restorations now for homeowners who want the same.

Why This Matters

Most 1962 split-levels were built for a different era. The good ones earn a second life: a kitchen that finally opens up, baths rebuilt from the studs, and rooms that hold the Oregon light. Done right, a whole-home restoration adds decades of use without touching the footprint.

Whole-home restoration standards, from scope sequencing to change-order practice, follow the guidance of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

Why It Pays Off

A whole-home restoration is the highest-leverage money you can put into an older Portland home. You already own the lot, the structure, and the location. The job is to bring it up to how you live now, then enjoy it for the next twenty years.

What the Restoration Included

The details that make it hold up.

A whole-home restoration is only as good as its finishes and the systems behind them. Here is what went into the Berkshire home.

I

Custom cabinetry

Shaker cabinetry built for the kitchen, wine bar, and baths, with glass uppers and integrated lighting.

II

Cortez quartz counters

Durable, low-maintenance quartz across the kitchen island, perimeter runs, and coffee station.

III

Wine and coffee bar

A built-in wine refrigerator plus a dedicated Miele coffee station, worked into the kitchen plan.

IV

12-foot Marvin sliders

Black-framed sliding glass doors that flood the living spaces with daylight and open to the patio.

V

White-oak floors

New white-oak hardwood run through the main level for a warm, continuous surface.

VI

Brushed-brass fixtures

Warm brass fittings and hardware in the baths, balanced against matte black in the kitchen.

We serve the full Portland metro, including NW Portland, Cedar Hills, Beaverton, Bethany, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, Tigard, and West Linn. If you are just outside these areas, call us and we will let you know if we can help.
